Camp Chisomo has worked in Mpyupyu village for over a decade, partnering with community leaders to break down many barriers that stand between children and their access to childhood, to dignity, and to hope for their future. But throughout our efforts, one stumbling block has remained. It seems with each step of progress we take, we face setbacks due to the lack of exceptional healthcare within the village. The local clinics lack training, equipment, and resources needed to diagnose and treat the medical conditions seen within Mpyupyu village. Children live with chronic conditions due to the lack of appropriate resources needed to combat such diseases. Social stigmas leave HIV undiagnosed and therefore highly transmittable. Malaria runs rampant due to lack of proper prevention and education. Diagnoses are generalized and treatment lacks instruction and follow through.
We have seen too much hurt be caused by “adequate” health care. We don’t believe adequate is enough. We want exceptional care for each child. In order to have dignity in the present and hope for the future, they must be healthy in the present. They must be able to achieve a future.
Our hope for the future is to one day open Chisomo Clinic—a resource for this community to receive exceptional health care, regardless of life circumstances. We have begun partnering with local clinic workers, learning from their experiences and seeking wisdom as they work tirelessly to care for their own community.
