Camp Chisomo believes that one of the most valuable gifts we can give the children of Malawi is hope for the future. In a country of 18 million people, nearly half of the population is under the age of 14. We believe the future of this country is in the hands of the children and subsequently in their pursuit of education. The first 8 grades of primary school are free to all children in Malawi, but once a student reaches secondary school, fees hike to near impossible costs.
Since our pilot program began in 2010, we have seen that a child's motivation to stay in school increases when they see education as attainable. Because of this, we began our School Sponsorship Program. We began with the oldest children in our pilot program, securing them a spot in secondary school at no cost to them; their role was to finish the first 8 grades of primary school. After completion of primary as well as an application process to assess motivators as well as aspirations, we then are able to fulfill the students dream of continuing their education.
Our School Sponsorship Program has since been able to send our first six students to secondary school. Through financial sponsorship, our students are able to attend a secondary education while the costs of tuition, room and board, food, and supplies are covered. Our staff team monitors grade reports and corresponds with school staff to ensure the needs of our students are being met. Our staff also has quarterly meetings with our students to evaluate their progress and discern whether changes need to be made to their educational goals.
